At 5to Mictlan, we believe the process doesn’t end when you leave the studio — it continues at home. Proper aftercare is what protects the detail, preserves the vibrancy, and ensures your tattoo heals the way it was designed to. Your skin is healing from a controlled wound, and how you treat it in the first few weeks makes all the difference.

Here’s how to care for your new piece the right way.

The First 24 Hours

Leave your bandage on for the amount of time your artist recommends. Once removed:

  1. Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
  2. Use clean hands — never a washcloth or sponge.
  3. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
  4. Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare ointment.

Your tattoo should breathe. Do not rewrap it unless specifically instructed.

Days 2–14: The Healing Phase

During this stage, your tattoo may feel tender, itchy, or begin to peel. This is normal.

  1. Wash gently 2–3 times a day.
  2. Apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer (thin layers only).
  3. Do not pick, scratch, or peel flaking skin.
  4. Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the area.

Let it heal naturally. Pulling at scabs or flakes can cause patchiness or ink loss.

What to Avoid

For at least 2–3 weeks:

  1. No swimming (pools, lakes, hot tubs).
  2. No direct sun exposure.
  3. No heavy sweating or intense friction on the area.
  4. No petroleum-based products unless directed.

Your tattoo is an investment. Treat it like one.

Long-Term Care

Once healed:

  1. Always apply sunscreen to exposed tattoos. UV rays fade ink over time.
  2. Keep your skin moisturized. Healthy skin keeps tattoos looking bold.
  3. Stay hydrated — skin health matters.
