Dysport and DAXXIFY® are both alternatives to Botox with differing characteristics. Dysport is known for faster onset and wider spread and has been available and well-studied for many years and is a familiar option for experienced neuromodulator patients. DAXXIFY® is the newest neuromodulator available, distinguished by its peptide-powered formulation that produces significantly longer duration (up to 6 months for many patients) alongside fast onset. If duration and reduced appointment frequency are your priorities, DAXXIFY® may be a better fit. If you're looking for a well-established option with fast onset and natural-feeling diffusion, Dysport could be worth discussing with Dr. Wilcox and her team.

Dysport and Botox work through the same fundamental mechanism but behave differently due to differences in the molecular formulation. Dysport typically has a faster onset (results often appear within 2-3 days compared to 3-5 days with Botox). It also spreads more diffusely from the injection point, which can be an advantage in larger treatment areas like the forehead where even distribution is desirable. For some patients, this produces a softer, most natural-feeling result. Dysport is slightly less long-acting than Botox for some patients. Units are not interchangeable between the two - Dysport is dosed differently and your provider will determine the appropriate amount for your treatment.

No. Dysport units are not interchangeable with Botox units or that of any other neuromodulator. 

Each product uses its own proprietary unit measurement of potency, and they can't be directly compared or converted. Dysport is typically injected in higher unit numbers than Botox to achieve the same effect. This is expected and doesn't mean you're receiving more product.

Most patients notice initial results within 2 to 3 days of their Dysport treatment. This is slightly faster than typical Botox onset time. 

Full results are visible at 2 weeks. If you have any concerns about evenness or adequacy of results, the 2-week mark is the appropriate time to discuss a touch-up with your provider.

The experience is very similar to Botox. The needles are extremely fine and most patients find the injections very tolerable. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if preferred (not available for 9 AM appointments), but the overwhelming majority of patients find they do not need it. Most patients describe a mild, brief pinch at each injection point with no linger discomfort.

Dysport has a well-established safety record and has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2009. Like all botulinum toxin products it carries a boxed warning regarding the potential spread of toxin effects. Dr. Wilcox can review full safety information with you at your appointment, but it is also included below. When administered by a qualified physician like Dr. Wilcox, it is a safe and predictable treatment with a very low rate of serious adverse events.

Dysport is well suited for patients with moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles who are looking for a fast-acting neuromodulator with a natural, diffuse result.

It's a particularly good fit for patients treating larger areas like the forehead, patients who have tried Botox and found it too localized, or patients who value faster onset.

Dysport is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin products or cow's milk protein (which is present in the Dysport formulation, an important distinction from Botox), patients with certain neuromuscular disorders, or patients with an active skin infection at the planned injection site.
