Most skin concerns don't come one at a time. Sun damage, redness, broken capillaries, brown spots, and uneven tone often appear together as the cumulative result of years of sun expoure and natural aging. IPL (or Intense Pulsed Light) is uniquely suited to address all of these concerns simultaneously in a single treatment.
At Sanger Avenue Medical Aesthetics, we use IPL photofacial treatments to delivery broad-spectrum light energy that targets multiple chromophores in the skin at once (breaking up pigmentation, reducing redness and vascular irregularities, and improving overall skin tone and texture) all with minimal downtime.
It's one of our most popular treatments for patients who want a comprehensive skin tone improvement rather than targeting a single isolated concern, and it's a favorite for ongoing maintenance for patients who spend time outdoors or deal with chronic redness and rosacea.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which delivers a single concentrated wavelength of light, IPL delivers a broad spectrum of wavelengths that can be filtered to target different skin concerns. This makes it uniquely versatile - a single IPL session can simultaneously address pigmentation, redness, and vascular irregularities that would otherwise require separate laser treatments. It's a power broad-spectrum treatment rather than a targeted single-concern solution.
IPL is most effective for diffuse sun damage and sunspots, age spots, redness and rosacea, broken capillaries, and facial veins, freckles, and overall uneven skin tone. It also has mild acne-treating benefits and can address some unwanted facial hair. It's particularly well-suited for patients whose primary concern is overall skin tone and clarity rather than a single isolated spot or lesion.
Both treatments work to address pigmentation, but they work differently and suit different patient needs.
IPL is a broad-spectrum treatment best suited for diffuse, widespread pigmentation and patients who want to address redness and pigmentation together in one session.
Laser pigment reduction with the Discovery PICO uses targeted nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses for more precise, powerful treatment of isolated or stubborn pigmented lesions.
For widespread sun damage with associated redness, IPL or NouvaDERM is often the better starting point. For persistent, isolated, or deeper pigmentation, the Discovery PICO typically delivers more complete clearance. Many patients benefit from both over time and Dr. Wilcox and her team will recommend the right approach based on your specific concerns.
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick and hot snapping or stinging (similar to a light rubber band snap) with each pulse. Treatment is generally well tolerated and takes around 20-30 minutes for a full face treatment depending on the areas being addressed. A cooling gel is applied to the skin before treatment to enhance comfort.
Brown spots and pigmented lesions will often appear slightly darker in the days immediately following treatment before they begin to fade. This is a normal and expected part of the process as the treated pigment rises to the surface before being naturally cleared. Some mild redness and swelling may occur immediately after treatment and typically resolves within a few hours to a day or two. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities the same day.
Most patients see meaningful improvement after a single session, with optimal results typically achieved after a series of 3-5 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the extent and type of concerns. Dr. Wilcox an her team will recommend a personalized treatment plan at your consultation.
IPL works best on patients with lighter skin tones and significant contrast between the skin and the targeted pigment or vessels. It is not recommended for patients with very dark skin tones due to the risk of burns or pigmentation changes (the broad-spectrum energy can be absorbed by the skin itself rather than the targeted chromophore in patients with more melanin).
For our patients with darker skin tones, we'd recommend the NouvaDERM treatments for general skin health and skin tone betterment, and more targeted laser treatments like the Discovery PICO as a safer and more effective option for pigmentation concerns.
Dr. Wilcox and her team will assess your skin tone and candidacy at your consultation.
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential as sun exposure is the primary driver of recurring pigmentation and redness. We recommend a minimum of SPF 30 every day, year-round. Medical-grade skincare from our SkinCeuticals or Hydrinity lines can support and extend your results between treatments. Many patients choose to do a maintenance IPL session once or twice a year (particularly those who spend time outdoors or deal with ongoing rosacea).
Yes! IPL pairs well with a lot of other treatments in our practice as part of a broader skin health plan. It's commonly combined with HydraFacial for a comprehensive skin refresh, and can be incorporated alongside Morpheus8 or injectables in a longer-term rejuvenation plan. It also pairs exceptionally well with NouvaDERM for a focus on skin health and radiance. Dr. Wilcox and her team will recommend the best course of action based on your goals at your consultation.
