Phase 1: Initial Care (First 24-48 Hours)
Bandage Removal
- Leave the bandage on for 2-4 hours (or as instructed). This allows your skin to begin healing in a clean environment.
- When ready, remove the bandage carefully. If it sticks, wet the area with lukewarm water to loosen it gently.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
- Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap to gently clean the tattoo. Avoid using a washcloth or sponge.
- Rinse until all plasma, blood, and ointment are removed.
- Pat with a clean, soft towel and let it air dry. Never rub the tattoo.
Phase 2: Moisturizing & Protection (Days 2-14)
Moisturizing
- Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free moisturizer like Aquaphor or Hustle Butter.
- Avoid over-moisturizing. A light layer is enough to prevent dryness without suffocating the skin.
What to Expect
- Days 2-5: Your tattoo might feel warm, swollen, or tender. This is normal.
- Days 5-10: Peeling and flaking will begin. This is your body shedding dead skin.
- DO NOT pick or scratch—let it flake naturally to avoid pulling out ink or causing scars.
- Days 10-14: Most of the peeling will subside, but your tattoo may look dull. This is normal and part of the healing process.
Phase 3: Protection During Healing
Avoid These Activities
- No baths, pools, hot tubs, or saunas. Water can introduce bacteria and cause infections.
- Showers are fine, but avoid directing high-pressure water onto your tattoo.
- Keep your tattoo covered when outdoors. Once healed, apply a high SPF sunscreen regularly to protect your tattoo from fading.
- Avoid clothing that sticks to your tattoo or causes friction. Choose loose, breathable fabrics.
- Try to minimize intense workouts that could stretch the skin or expose your tattoo to sweat and bacteria.
Phase 4: Long-Term Tattoo Care
Even after your tattoo is fully healed (usually within 4-6 weeks), maintaining healthy skin is key to preserving its vibrancy:
- Moisturize daily: Keep your skin hydrated with a quality, fragrance-free lotion.
- Use sunscreen: Protect your tattoo from UV rays to prevent fading and discoloration.
- Stay hydrated: Healthy skin starts from within, so drink plenty of water.
