Understanding Medical Massage Prescriptions: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to book a medical massage session through your insurance, there are a few important things you need to know before we begin.

To meet insurance requirements and provide the highest level of care, all clients must first obtain a prescription from a licensed medical provider—such as a physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist.

What the Prescription Must Include:

  1. It must specifically state “medical massage” as the recommended treatment.
  2. It should include either a diagnosis code (ICD-10) or clearly describe the medical condition being treated (e.g., “low back pain,” “cervical strain,” or “post-surgical recovery”).
  3. The prescription must be current and signed by a licensed provider, with NPI# included.
⚠️ Please note: I can only treat the condition(s) listed on the prescription.
For example, if your provider prescribes medical massage for “low back pain,” I will focus exclusively on the lower back and the surrounding muscles contributing to that issue. I am not permitted to address unrelated areas during the session.

What Makes Medical Massage Different?

Unlike general therapeutic massage, medical massage is clinical and condition-specific. It includes:

  1. Pre- and post-treatment assessments
  2. Documentation for insurance
  3. Targeted manual techniques based on the diagnosis
  4. A treatment plan focused on measurable outcomes

Think of it as a physical therapy-style session, tailored through massage.
