TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. It is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. It is located in front of the ear on each side of the head. The TMJ is responsible for the movement of the jaw, including opening and closing the mouth, as well as chewing and speaking. This joint is a hinge joint that allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side, which is essential for speaking, chewing, and yawning.
