In 1961, in the heart of Mt. Brook Alabama, a barber shop by the name “Treadwell” opened its doors. The original owner, J.T. Treadwell created an unchanging element in the neighborhood that has stood for over 60 consecutive years.
It was in 1998 that Treadwell was sold to Steve Bishop. Mr. Bishop managed the barbershop as a successful business for more than 20 years. Admired by the community, Mr. Bishop carried the torch proudly and helped add to the nostalgia so prevalent with Treadwell.
In honor of the continued tradition of Treadwell, Don Mathews Jr. became the owner and proprietor in 2025.
With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Don’s resume was as impressive as his skills. He had owned "Southside Barber Shop" for 20 years, which had become a landmark for impeccable workmanship and old-school charm. In response to the worsening condition of his ailing father, he transitioned into the world of education to assist him with his barber college business, taking up the roles of instructor and administrator of Alabama State College of Barber Styling (Est. 1978). His wealth of knowledge and passion for the craft suited him well in this new endeavor. When his father died in 2014 he became the owner of the college and with a heavy heart, oversaw its closure in 2021.
“As owner of Treadwell, I promise to honor and preserve the tradition, history, and integrity of Treadwell by maintaining the values and principles that have long defined this legacy. I am committed to respecting and upholding the rich heritage that Treadwell represents while ensuring that our practices reflect the same dedication and quality that have made Treadwell a respected name."
