What to Know About HydraFacial®

HydraFacial® is a three-step process to deep-clean, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. HydraFacial uses a form of dermabrasion called hydradermabrasion to slough off dead skin cells and debris by propelling a liquid onto the surface. In addition, the HydraFacial® uses a proprietary tip that creates a vortex effect for more effective exfoliation. The final stage of a HydraFacial® is the infusion of vitamins and peptides propelled onto the skin via the handheld HydraPeel® Tip. Additional boosters and customized serums may also be added to the treatment for patient-specific results.

Pre + Post Care

Pre-Treatment

Pre-Treatment Instructions

To ensure your HydraFacial delivers optimal results, it’s important to prepare your skin properly. Avoid using any harsh skincare products, like tretinoin or glycolic acid, for at least 48 hours before your appointment. It’s also wise to skip any procedures that might irritate the skin, such as waxing or laser hair removal, in the week leading up to your treatment.

Post-Treatment

Post-Treatment Instructions

After your HydraFacial treatment, it’s essential to protect your freshly rejuvenated skin from potential irritants and damage.

PROPER AFTERCARE IS IMPORTANT TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF A FACIAL TREATMENT AND MAINTAIN THE RESULTS. HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR AFTERCARE:

AVOID EXFOLIATION

  1. Don't exfoliate the area for 48 hours after treatment. This includes scrubs and exfoliating products, which can contain micro-beads that can irritate your skin.

AVOID HEAT

  1. Avoid heat sources like hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24 hours. You should also avoid swimming pools for 48 hours.

AVOID SUN EXPOSURE

  1. Limit your sun exposure for at least 3 days after treatment, and wear SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily. If you do go outside, try to wear a hat.

AVOID CERTAIN PRODUCTS

  1. Use only gentle cleansers, simple moisturizer, and SPF. Don't use harsh or irritating products, like at-home peels, toners, cleansers, retinol, or anything with salicylic acid. You should also avoid over-the-counter acne medications like benzoyl peroxide for 48 hours.

AVOID MAKEUP

  1. If you don't need to wear makeup the day of your treatment, it's recommended to avoid it. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to acne, you might want to wait 48 hours or longer before applying makeup again.

HYDRATE

  1. Hydrating serums can help your results last longer. Drinking water is always good for you as well.

TIPS:

  1. Avoid direct sunlight and sun-beds, as well as indirect heat like saunas, hot baths, and showers for 48 hours. If you wash your hair, use lukewarm water to avoid irritating your skin. wear spf 30+ always and try to re-apply before going outside. wearing sun protection like hats, sunglasses, uv umbrellas are always encouraged.
  2. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and help flush out toxins.
  3. Try not to touch your face or other treated areas, and skip any at-home facial massage. Your skin may be sensitive, so a hands-off approach is best.
  4. Avoid makeup for at least the rest of the day. While this isn’t 100% necessary, applying makeup right after a facial is not ideal and may clog your recently deep-cleaned pores.
  5. Wait at least two to three days before using skincare treatments or products that could irritate your skin or increase skin sensitivity. That means no toners, exfoliants, new products, or acne treatments. You should also avoid products with vitamin C and retinol.
  6. Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid high heat. Some products used during your treatment may make you more sensitive to the sun.
  7. Take some time to relax and let your skin rest. This isn’t a requirement for treatments, but it’s still nice to continue the relaxing spa vibe for the rest of the day.
  8. Make sure to use a clean pillowcase and clean towels. This will help keep dirt and oils out of your pores.

FAQs

What is the treatment like?

This is a 30-90 minute, invigorating facial treatment that really makes your skin feel clean and healthy. It’s very comfortable and relaxing. During a HydraFacial treatment, you’ll feel some very gentle suction as dead skin cells and impurities get lifted away, then you’ll feel your skin bathe in hydration and skin-boosting, antioxidant formulas. It doesn’t get better than this, people.

How many HydraFacial treatments do I need?

We recommend doing HydraFacial's every 4 weeks for this reason:

As we age, our skin cells ‘turn over’ at a slower and slower rate. This can lead to dull skin, congestion, and other skin imperfections. By doing an exfoliating and skin-boosting treatment like HydraFacial's, you’re encouraging your skin cells to turn over every month and cleansing out impurities. This encourages a healthier glow, decreased breakouts, clearer complexion, and anti-aging benefits! Can’t get to your treatment monthly? That’s ok! Our clients generally report much more radiant skin with even one treatment!

What to expect after HydraFacial treatment?

HydraFacial has no downtime, so you can resume your daily activities right away! Sometimes people have a tiny bit of skin redness just after the treatment, but this is pretty uncommon. You can apply makeup (mineral makeup is best, though!) right after your treatment if you’d like, but we'd recommend waiting a few hours at least.

Is a HydraFacial® safe during pregnancy?

A traditional HydraFacial® may include an exfoliation step utilizing acids, such as salicylic acid, that have not been shown to be safe during pregnancy. Although the exfoliation step of the service may be customized with pregnancy-safe ingredients, the system itself has not been evaluated for pregnant or breastfeeding patients and as such, the HydraFacial® system is not intended for these populations.

Can a HydraFacial® cause hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is essentially a defense response to inflammation within the skin. When an injury such as exfoliation is delivered to the epidermis, it may stimulate melanocytes to increase melanin production and transfer the pigment to surrounding keratinocytes, the most prevalent skin cell. This results in patches or spots of darker-colored skin that appear tan, dark brown or purple. Generally, the suction and chemical exfoliation in a HydraFacial® are too gentle to induce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, but it is important to consult with a trained skincare professional to determine if HydraFacial® is an appropriate hydradermabrasion exfoliation treatment.

Does a HydraFacial® remove blackheads?

HydraFacial® uses hydradermabrasion along with a proprietary tip designed with a spiral pattern to create a vortex effect to purify pores. The painless, gentle suction of the handpiece lifts the impurity off and away from the skin and into a waste reservoir. This combo is quite effective in removing superficial blackheads, but for deeper blackheads manual extractions may or may not be needed to safely and completely remove the blackhead.

Is HydraFacial® good for acne?

A HydraFacial® combines hydradermabrasion with a gentle chemical peel and deep pore cleansing for a complete treatment that, with regular use, may help mitigate several of the causal factors of acne. Monthly or bimonthly HydraFacial® treatments are the general recommendation with some conditions taking 4 to 6 months to see results. However, many sufferers of acne are prescribed retinoids such as tretinoin or use over-the-counter versions like retinol to manage acne flare-ups. Because retinoid use should be stopped three days before a HydraFacial®, patients that have had great success with retinoid use may find more benefit in skipping a HydraFacial® as to not disrupt the activity of the retinoid in the skin. If considering HydraFacial® for the treatment of acne, it’s best to consult with a skin care professional who can accurately assess the skin and provide realistic expectations of HydraFacial®benefits.

How long do the effects of a HydraFacial® last?

The longevity of any non-invasive procedure depends on a patient’s response to the treatment as well as their lifestyle and skincare practices. Because a HydraFacial® does not act upon the deeper layers of the skin, the effects of a HydraFacial® will generally last 5-7 days. Repeated HydraFacial® benefits the skin by encouraging healthier function of the skin with less congestion and acne. In this case, the effects of a HydraFacial® may be longer lasting.

Does your skin purge after HydraFacial®?

Although the chemical exfoliation used in a HydraFacial® is quite mild, the combination of hydradermabrasion, exfoliating acids such as salicylic, and suction may accelerate the movement of deeper impurities in the skin, creating a “purge” effect. Generally, a “purging” breakout will occur in areas of the face where a patient normally may experience breakouts, for example, along the jawline. If the purging is in an area that is not prone to breakouts, it may be an inflammation reaction from a treatment or products that are irritating or too aggressive for the skin.

Can you see results after one HydraFacial®?

A HydraFacial® includes two forms of exfoliation (hydradermabrasion and a light chemical peel), manual stimulation of circulation (via suction) and the jet infusion of vitamins and peptides. After this cocktail of treatments there may be a visible difference in the skin. HydraFacial® may immediately brighten the skin, improve texture and diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles, making it a popular modality before events such as special outings or photoshoots. The immediate effects of smoother feeling skin and improved hydration may last 5 to 7 days.

Can you shower after a HydraFacial®?

Yes, absolutely. However, you may not want to. The final step of a HydraFacial® includes the jet infusion of skin nourishing peptides and antioxidants, and considering it takes the skin at least 30 minutes to absorb topicals, it is advisable to wait at least an hour before showering. Better yet, allow the serums to remain on the skin for the rest of the day. But, if you must shower, avoid applying hot water to the face as heat may increase inflammation in the skin after an exfoliation treatment, such as a HydraFacial®. As always, it’s best to consult with a trusted skincare professional at the time of the HydraFacial® treatment for specific recommendations on when to cleanse the skin after HydraFacial®.
