How to prepare your child for their haircut visit

Preparing your child for a haircut at home may help the experience go smoothly. Whether it is his/hers first time or you’ve been to Wild Styles numerous times, here’s a practical, friendly guide.

Choose the right time:

  1. Avoid nap times
  2. Pick a time when your child is well rested and fed
  3. Weekends are our busiest. So if you are looking for a more quiet / calm time, mornings during the week are your best times

Let them see what to expect:

  1. Read a children’s book or watch a short video on a haircut
  2. Show pictures of our salon
  3. If possible, bringing them before the appointment day to explore the salon
  4. Reenact at home what to expect (combing / spraying their hair with a water bottle)

What to bring

  1. A favorite toy, book or tablet
  2. Snacks (non-messy)
  3. A comfort item (stuffy or blanket)

Before the haircut

  1. Talk about it positively
  2. Explain what will happen in simple terms (“they’ll trim up your hair to keep it neat”)
  3. Avoid saying things like “it won’t hurt” (kids then may expect pain) or saying “it’s just a haircut”
  4. When choosing an inspiration picture to show your stylist, make sure the model in the picture matches your child’s hair type / texture

After the haircut

  1. Celebrate! Compliments go a long way
  2. Your child may look into the mirror to see their new haircut and how cool they look!
  3. Lastly, we always end with choosing our prize, a lollipop!
