Haircut Therapy

This isn’t about a perfect haircut. It’s about a peaceful experience

Haircut Therapy™ is a client-led, sensory-aware journey focused on trust and comfort—not outcomes. Each session meets the individual where they are, using gentle exposure and connection to slowly desensitize and build confidence over time.

Haircut Therapy™ is a therapy-informed model developed with clinician input and shaped by lived experience. It was created to fill a critical gap in care—offering a compassionate, client-led journey where trust, sensory safety, and gradual desensitization come first.

Haircut Therapy™ was born from my own experience as a mom sitting in the struggle.

As the parent of a nonverbal autistic child, I know what it’s like. The meltdowns, the fear, the heartbreak of watching your child become overwhelmed by something so simple. I know the feeling of holding your breath, hoping this time will be different, and walking out of yet another appointment in tears.

After years behind the chair as a hairstylist, I began to realize that families like mine weren’t just underserved—we were unseen. The support we needed didn’t exist. So I created it.

Haircut Therapy™ isn’t just a gentler haircut—it’s a completely different approach. It’s therapy-informed, client-led, and intentionally slow. It's about honoring the nervous system, building trust, and creating a safe space where nothing is forced and every small win is celebrated.

This work is deeply personal. It's not about perfection—it’s about dignity, connection, and giving children the time and support they deserve. To create a space where haircuts can become healing—not just something to survive, but something that can be done with compassion, respect, and care.

You deserve that. Your child deserves that.

And if no one’s ever told you this before... you’re not alone.

FAQS

What is Haircut Therapy™?

Haircut Therapy™ is a sensory-aware, trauma-informed approach to haircuts that prioritizes trust, emotional regulation, and connection. It's a therapy  model. It’s NOT just a haircut—it’s a gentle, relationship-based process designed to meet each child exactly where they are, while working towards goals.

What ages do you work with?

I typically support children ages 2 and up, including teens and young adults. If you’re unsure whether this is the right fit, reach out and we can talk through it together.

How do I know which package is right for us?

If your child is brand new to sensory support or has past trauma around haircuts, the Starter Journey is a great first step. If your child is beginning to show comfort or familiarity, the Sensory Support or Complete Journey packages may offer the consistency they need. I recommend everyone start this journey by booking a First Time Sensory Haircut. This will allow me to gauge what's most appropriate based on the intake form, my observation, and talking with the caregiver.

What happens during a desensitization session?

Desensitization sessions are 20 minutes focused on helping your child feel safe. We might play near the tools, explore the space, or practice calming strategies. No haircutting takes place unless your child initiates and is ready. This is a trust and relationship building phase.

What if my child refuses to participate or has a meltdown?

That’s completely okay. There is no pressure here. Progress might look like simply entering the room or making eye contact. Every child moves at their own pace, and we celebrate even the smallest wins.

Does my child need to sit still or get a full haircut in one session?

Nope! Readiness and regulation come first. Some children may need several sessions before we even attempt a haircut—and that’s perfectly normal.

Can I stay with my child during the session?

Yes, absolutely. Your presence is welcome and often helpful. We'll communicate together to determine what supports your child best—whether that’s sitting close or gently stepping back.

What should we do to prepare for our appointment?

Talk to your child calmly and simply about visiting a gentle, quiet place to explore. Avoid using words like “cut” or “scissors” if those have been upsetting in the past. You might say, “We’re going to visit a calm place where someone will help us learn how to take care of our hair.” Bring anything comforting—like a snack, headphones, or a favorite toy or blanket.

What makes Haircut Therapy™ different from a regular sensory haircut?

This is a therapy-based, nervous system-first approach—not just a quiet room or patient stylist. I use intentional, individualized strategies to reduce overwhelm, support emotional regulation, and build lasting trust over time.

What if we don’t finish the haircut?

That’s totally okay. I never force or rush. If we only trim a section or just explore tools—that’s still a success. The priority is to help your child feel safe, not to finish a task.

Is this covered by insurance or waivers?

Haircut Therapy™ is not currently covered by insurance. However, I encourage families to submit for Katie Beckett approval. I'm happy to provide receipts or documentation if needed.
