FAQs

What is a head spa?

A head spa is a luxurious treatment that focuses on the health of your scalp while providing deep relaxation. Your service may include a scalp analysis, cleansing, exfoliation, nourishing treatments, massage, aromatherapy, and customized products based on your scalp's needs.

What is a dry head spa?

A Dry Head Spa is a waterless wellness treatment designed to melt away stress, calm the nervous system, and relieve tension throughout the scalp, neck, face, and shoulders. Using therapeutic massage techniques, this deeply relaxing experience promotes circulation and mental relaxation without washing or wetting the hair.

Perfect for guests who want to unwind, relieve headaches or muscle tension, or enjoy a restorative wellness experience while keeping their hairstyle intact.

What is a sensory spa?

A sensory spa is a space dedicated to relaxation through intentional, soothing touch and sensory experiences. At House of Iwa, our sensory wellness rituals are designed to help quiet the mind and encourage a deeper sense of relaxation through gentle, repetitive techniques such as hair play, scalp touch, soft brushing, light scratching, and calming massage.

Each experience is personalized to your comfort level and sensory preferences. You remain in control throughout your service and may request adjustments, pause, or stop any technique at any time.

Our sensory wellness experiences are strictly professional, non-sexual, and centered around relaxation, comfort, and personal well-being.

Who is a head spa treatment for?

Head spa treatments are suitable for most people and are especially beneficial if you experience:

  1. Dry or itchy scalp
  2. Oily scalp or buildup
  3. Flaking
  4. Thinning hair
  5. Stress or tension
  6. Dull or lifeless hair
  7. A desire for relaxation and self-care

How often should I receive a head spa treatment?

For optimal scalp health, we recommend treatments every 4–6 weeks. Clients addressing specific concerns such as excessive buildup or thinning hair may benefit from more frequent visits based on their personalized treatment plan.

Will a head spa help my hair grow?

A healthy scalp creates the ideal environment for healthy hair growth. While no treatment can guarantee new hair growth, regular scalp care, improved circulation, and proper home care can support stronger, healthier hair over time.

Do I need to wash my hair before my appointment?

No. Please arrive with dry hair that is free from heavy styling products whenever possible. We'll take care of everything during your treatment.

Should I arrive with clean or dirty hair?

Either is fine! In fact, a little natural oil or product buildup can help us better assess your scalp during your consultation.

Can I wear makeup?

Yes! Your treatment focuses on the scalp and hair. We recommend keeping makeup minimal around the hairline if possible, but it isn't required. If your service includes a face massage, it is recommended to not have any make up on, however, if you do, we offer make up removal wipes.

Will my hair be blow-dried?

Your hair will be towel-dried before you leave. Although full styling is not included, we do offer a self serve area with blowdryers, hot tools and light products for guests to use.

Why do most head spas not blow-dry or style hair

It's not that we don't want to, most head spa treatments are serviced by estheticians, estheticians are not licensed to blow-dry or style hair in the state of Hawaii

Can I color my hair before or after a head spa?

We recommend waiting 48–72 hours after a color service before receiving a head spa treatment.

Can I receive a treatment if I have psoriasis or eczema?

Many clients with sensitive scalp conditions benefit from gentle scalp treatments. However, if your scalp has open sores, active infections, or severe inflammation, we may recommend waiting until the condition has improved. If you're unsure, please contact us before booking.

Are there any conditions that would prevent me from receiving a treatment?

For your safety, treatments may not be performed if you have:

  1. Open wounds or sores on the scalp
  2. Contagious scalp conditions
  3. Active lice
  4. Recent scalp surgery
  5. Severe sunburn on the scalp
  6. Fever or contagious illness

If you have questions about a medical condition, please contact us before your appointment.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing with a neckline that allows easy access to your neck and shoulders. Avoid bulky hoodies or high collars if possible. We do offer wraps to change if needed. We also recommend removing necklaces, earrings, and other jewelry before your appointment, as they may become wet during your treatment.

Is this treatment safe during pregnancy?

Many of our treatments can be modified for pregnancy under 20 weeks. Please let us know if you are pregnant when booking so we can tailor your experience and avoid any ingredients or techniques that may not be recommended.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes! Gift certificates are available and make a wonderful gift for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or anyone in need of relaxation.

Should I wear jewelry to my appointment?

For your comfort, we recommend removing necklaces, earrings, and other jewelry before your appointment. Since your treatment includes scalp, neck, and shoulder massage, jewelry may become wet or interfere with your experience. If possible, please leave valuable jewelry at home.

Can I receive a head spa treatment if I have hair extensions?

At this time, we are unable to perform head spa treatments on clients with hair extensions. Our services involve specialized scalp massage, cleansing, and techniques that require unrestricted access to the scalp and may compromise the integrity of extension bonds, tapes, or wefts. We appreciate your understanding.

Can I bring a guest?

To maintain a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, we kindly ask that only guests receiving services enter the spa. Due to limited seating and space, friends, family members, and visitors are not permitted to accompany you during your appointment.
