IPL Q&A

What is IPL or intense pulsed light?

Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is a non-invasive treatment using high-intensity pulses of light to treat a variety of skin problems. It can be used on the hands, face, neck, and chest.

The IPL therapy works the same as traditional lasers by using light energy that’s absorbed by targeted cells with chromophores, or color, in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat and damages the target area, prompting a healing response and stimulating new skin growth, collagen, and elastin production.

The IPL systems stand out from the rest because they deliver numerous wavelengths or colors in each pulse of light, as opposed to just one.

After cleansing the treatment area, Dr. Ciocchetti applies a cooling gel to the area and gives you dark glasses to protect your eyes. Next, Dr. Ciocchetti will apply the hand-held laser device to your skin. The treatments usually take around 30 minutes or less.

What is IPL used for?

Intense pulsed light therapy is used as a skin treatment to get rid of or smooth the appearance of:

  • Freckles.
  • Rosacea.
  • Redness
  • Age spots.
  • Brown spots.
  • Port wine stains.
  • Dark hair removal.
  • Broken visible blood vessels.

It can also work on acne and stretch marks, depending on the severity. A series of IPL treatments to rejuvenate aged skin is photorejuvenation.

Most people have three to six treatments scheduled about one month apart to notice results. You might experience redness and mild pinpoint bruising after the IPL procedure, but this shouldn’t last more than a couple of days. You’re free to apply makeup immediately.

How long do I need to wait in between IPL treatments?

You have to wait at least three to six weeks in between IPL treatments to allow your skin ample time to heal. It’s necessary to allow the exfoliation process to finish before it can start again.

The IPL sessions can work in a progression where deeper targets and higher power settings can be safely and gradually introduced.

Since the laser and IPL treatments cause a thermal injury to your skin, an adequate recovery period is needed.

IPL treatments are an excellent choice to correct your skin problems and rejuvenate your skin. Book online or call Northpoint Aesthetics to take advantage of this successful modern technology.
