Most people get microneedling on their face, but you can also get it on your legs, back, neck or other areas where you notice damaged or aging skin. You’ll probably need multiple treatments to achieve your desired results. Microneedling is especially useful in treating enlarged pores, fine lines, wrinkles, loose or crepey (thin and wrinkled) skin, mild scars, especially those from acne or burns, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure for your skin. After using topical numbing medication, Dr. Ciocchetti uses thin needles to make tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. The damage helps stimulate your skin’s healing process, so it produces more collagen and elastin. These proteins keep your skin firm and smooth.

Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

The microneedling procedure is designed to start your body’s natural healing response in your skin. A microtrauma -- a controlled skin injury -- is delivered in a way that activates this response that involves the production of collagen, elastin, and blood vessels, and the appearance of new and smoother skin.

Dr. Ciocchetti uses the Vivace RF Microneedling machine, which is the only FDA-approved microneedling device in the United States. The device uses 36 tiny, gold-tipped needles which poke small holes in your skin’s surface and stimulates your body’s immune system. This microtrauma happens thousands of times in a matter of seconds and is adjustable to particular depths.

The addition of RF energy using the Vivace device, instead of the traditional microneedling, means virtually no bleeding, and the ability to make deeper passes for better, longer-lasting results.

The tiny needles penetrate into your epidermis and the upper layers of the dermis, to properly ignite your body’s healing response for the best results. The increased collagen and elastin formation is what ultimately creates plump, smoother skin.

It works well on the face, neck, arms, abdomen, back, hands, and other areas. It’s relatively painless, and you’ll likely be given a numbing cream to minimize any discomfort

While you might experience some redness for up to 24 hours following your appointment, this is normal and means that the procedure went well.

You might need multiple treatments, typically three to six, to achieve optimal results.

Who is a good candidate for Microneedling?

Since it isn’t light-based and only causes minor wounding to your skin, most people are good candidates for microneedling. Age and skin color don’t matter, and microneedling can even treat areas of your body where the skin is thin.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

There are many benefits of microneedling, including:

  • It exfoliates your skin.
  • It rejuvenates your skin.
  • It can treat acne, including cystic acne.
  • Improves skin quality and texture immediately.
  • The procedure only takes 30 to 60 minutes plus numbing time.
  • It helps to reduce skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation.
  • It’s especially useful for reducing oil production and scarring.
  • It’s one of the quickest ways to achieve a more youthful-looking complexion.

How does platelet-rich plasma therapy work when combined with microneedling?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) works well when combined with microneedling.

Your blood is mainly a liquid called plasma that also contains small solid components: red and white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets house proteins that include growth factors, and they’re especially useful for healing injuries.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy involves drawing a small amount of your blood, separating the platelets and concentrating the blood in a centrifugation process, so the platelets are five to 10 times more concentrated than average.

This enhanced concentration of growth factors injected into the area can help speed up the healing process and further enhance the effects of microneedling. The PRP helps to boost the tone and texture of your skin and can reduce the appearance of:

  • Scarring.
  • Stretch marks.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling with PRP can even decrease the amount of adult, hormone-related breakouts many people experience. Microneedling with PRP is most commonly used on the face, chest, hands, and arms.
