What is Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage?

Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage

Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage is a deeply therapeutic technique that traces its roots back to ancient Eastern healing traditions from Japan, China, and India. The word “Ashiatsu” combines the Japanese words “ashi” (foot) and “atsu” (pressure). While its origins are rooted in Eastern philosophy and energetic healing, the practice has evolved especially in the West into a clinical and anatomically focused modality designed for deep tissue work.

The version I practice is a Western adaptation of Ashiatsu, developed to deliver safe, effective, and consistent deep pressure using the feet. Unlike traditional Eastern Ashiatsu, which may incorporate meridian-based work and barefoot walking, modern Western developed Ashiatsu barefoot massage uses overhead bars for balance and applies slow, broad, gliding strokes that sink deep into the muscle tissue without causing pain or sharp discomfort.

I am certified in Level 1 and Level 2 Ashiatsu myofascial barefoot massage through the Center for Barefoot Massage, and also trained in Barefoot Silks Massage through DeepFeet, which emphasizes flowing, fascia-focused work using aerial silks for enhanced body mechanics and therapeutic flow.

I was drawn to Ashiatsu barefoot massage because I’ve always loved the results of deep tissue work but I believe recovery should feel soothing, not punishing. Ashiatsu barefoot massage gives me the ability to offer therapeutic depth with the relaxing feel of fluid, meditative strokes. If you’re someone who needs serious bodywork but doesn’t enjoy the discomfort of traditional deep tissue massage, Ashiatsu barefoot massage offers the best of both worlds.
